BJ's House (Hotel) Phnom Penh Review

Monday, September 30, 2013

Address: BJ's House 42, Street 118, Riverfront, Phnom Penh, Cambodia Type of Room: Superior with breakfast Cost of Room: 29 USD per night on Agoda.com Date of Stay: December 2011 What I liked: The location What I did not like: Main door closed at night, no phone in the room. BJs' staff gave my name and bus info to a guy in Siem Reap who tried to cheat me on my arrival there. I bought my next morning's bus ticket to Siem Reap through BJ's House because I had arrived late in the evening and did not want to go around looking for that. They arranged for a ticket for 9 USD on a Paramount bus. Once on the bus I found that other passengers had paid 6-7 USD for the ticket. OK, I considered the extra 2-3 dollars as service charge. Upon reaching Siem Reap, I found a guy waiting for me at the bus station carrying my name card. That was a surprise. Only BJ's House knew I was travelling in a Paramount bus arriving at that time. He had a Tuk Tuk ready for taking me to my Siem Reap hotel. He said his "Uncle" was driving the Tuk Tuk. He first told me a sob story on the way to the hotel and offered his services for my next day's trip to Angkor Park for 15 USD. He spoke very good English so I agreed. But upon reaching the hotel he started saying that his "Uncle" will drive me through Angkor and his "Uncle" also spoke good English. Before entering the hotel I tried speaking to the "Uncle" and immediately found out that he did not know a word of English. I told the con guy that I did not need his Tuk Tuk, paid him 1 USD and told him to go away. But instead of leaving he followed me into the hotel and started offering all kinds of services during my stay there. He almost created a scene in front of the reception and finally left after he knew he was going to get nothing from me. Only BJs' staff could have given my info to that guy. No one at my Siem Reap hotel knew how or from where I would travel to Siem Reap. Even the con himself did not know which hotel to take me too. Paramount bus had brought 40 passengers but only I got the con reception, so the bus staff cannot be suspected. (Read more below)

Apart from the above, the experience at the "house" was OK. The place is very small, may be just 7 rooms in all. Its only advantage is the riverfront location. All kinds of bars/food/massage joints around. The main door of the "house" gets locked at night and the staff sleep in the lobby. I arrived late from the casino and had to wake up some of them before the door was opened. Free breakfast for vegetarian guests was bread/butter/jam, fresh fruits and coffee. Free wi-fi in the lobby was very fast. The room was clean. No telephone in the room so I ordered my morning coffee on the previous evening that was sent to the room on time.

There was no separate shower area in the bathroom so the entire bathroom floor got wet and slippery during shower. The bathroom sink was of an unusual but creative design. Instant water heater worked fine.

Overall BJ's is fine for a one night stay but no more. That too provided one does not buy a bus ticket through them.
