Dosa King - Indian Vegetarian Restaurant Soi 11 Sukhumvit Bangkok

Sunday, October 20, 2013

Dosa King is one of the three Indian restaurants on Soi 11 (entrance also from Soi 11/1), Sukhumvit Bangkok, the other two being Khana Khazana and Mrs. Balbir's. Soi 11 is at a walking distance from both Nana and Asoke BTS Skytrain stations. Dosa King is open daily from 11.00am to 11.00pm (Phone: 26511700). It is a  vegetarian restaurant (dairy products are used) and serves North and South Indian food. There are about 15-16 varieties of dosa on the menu apart from idli, vada, uttapam, and upma, etc. North Indian menu includes all the usual vegetarian curries, daal, and tandoori roti, naan etc. Vegetarian snack favourites like samosa, vegetable/paneer/onion/bread pakora, and batata vada are also available. Prices of dosa start from 70 THB for a plain dosa without filling to 180 THB for pizza dosa (God save Madras). Idli and vada with sambar cost 70 and 80 THB each. North Indian curry prices are in the range of 115 and 200 THB. Plain tandoori roti costs 25 THB and aloo paratha costs 65 THB. Dosa Thali (Set Meal) with masala dosa, idli, vada, sambar, rice, etc., at 275 THB could be worth a try. North Indian thali too cost 275 THB. (Read more and see pictures below)

Chilli Dosa at Dosa King - Indian Vegetarian Restaurant Soi 11 Sukhumvit Bangkok

This was my second visit to the restaurant. I ordered Chilli dosa (140 THB) and it turned out to be a mistake. Garnishing on top of the dosa looked strange and the filling inside was very little and too hot. I was told that apart from green chillies, red chilli powder was also added to justify the name. Paneer added to the filling had been taken out of a curry like paneer makhanwala. Usually fresh paneer crumbs are added to a dosa like this. Overall, the chilli dosa lacked flavour. A masala papad would taste much better. May be I should have ordered pizza dosa. Then at least it would have been easier for me to forgive this restaurant. The entire blame would have been mine to take. I could have said to myself - "Stupid fellow, if you wanted pizza, why didn't you go to Pizza Hut?" Now I don't know if I will go to Dosa King for a third time. May be I will, just to try their Dosa Thali which comes with masala dosa and not chilli dosa.
