Cheap Hotel Near Border Gate Macau - Victoria Hotel Review

Friday, November 8, 2013

Friday and Saturday night hotel tariffs are very high in Macau as compared to weekdays. Upon searching online, I found that Victoria Hotel at Border Gate was available at the lowest price. For that reason and the fact that I wanted to see Border Gate area, I booked this hotel. Advantages: Low Price, Clean Room, Close to Border Gate, Accessible by Free Shuttle Buses going to Border Gate Disadvantage: High taxi fare at night from Macau City to Border Gate area Address: No. 118, Estrada Do Arco, Near Border Gate, Macau. Period of Stay: March 2012 Type of Room: Deluxe Room Tariff Per Night: 94.50 USD (Saturday Night). The hotel turned out all right. Located at a 10 minute walk from Border Gate, the hotel can be reached by using any of the numerous free casino shuttle buses going towards Border Gate. This would be true only during day time though. After 9 pm, shuttle buses going towards Border Gate get crowded and taxi drivers start asking for 100 HKD to go towards Border Gate from Macau City. Actual taxi fare should be between 30 and 50 HKD. Therefore, to compare cost of this hotel with others in Macau City one should add 150 HKD to account for to and fro taxi fare. The room was small but clean and the bed was comfortable. Two chairs and a small coffee table with a tea / coffee maker were placed next to the window which opened towards the main road outside the hotel. There was no cupboard in the room but a hanger fitting in a corner to hang clothes. Two pairs of bathroom slippers were kept next to the bed. Bathroom was compact but clean and somehow contained a bath tub. Basic toiletries were provided. The AC control Panel in the room had markings in Chinese only, so I could not make out how to increase or decrease cooling. One of the two lifts in the hotel had buttons printed in Chinese only. Which one was for the lobby? I found out after some trial and error. It was all fun. Check-in and check-out were a breeze as the reception staff did speak some English. The hotel keeps a key deposit of 500 HKD which is returned upon check-out. This is a standard practice in all the hotels in Macau. Check-out time is 12.00 noon after which 50% of daily room rent is charged for late check-out up to 6.00pm.

There is this lively public park right opposite the hotel where locals gather to chit chat and play a Chinese board game.

Walking on the road going towards Border Gate, I found this super market called "Goods" or something like that. Nice for buying water bottles or whatever.
