Hotel View Point Lachen North Sikkim Review

Saturday, October 26, 2013

I got to stay in Hotel Lachen View Point as part of a package I bought from Tibet Tours & Travels of Mr. Prabir Sen. Complete story is in this post: North Sikkim Tour Part-1. The hotel was perhaps once known as Fortuna Lachen, as some websites still refer to it. Mr. Prabir Sen's staff assured me that Hotel Fortuna Lachen and Hotel View Point Lachen are one and the same. Because the price of a one night stay and food in this hotel was covered in the Rs. 17900/- I paid for the whole 2N/3D North Sikkim package, I never knew how much this stay cost me. My guess is that room tariff here would range between Rs. 2000-4000 per night depending on the season. Rooms can be booked without taking a package. (Try their phone numbers: 94348 67312 or 94753 83996). The room tariff reflects the location of the hotel rather than the facilities one gets here. On the positive side, food served here is better as compared to Fortuna Lachung, only vegetarian food is served in Lachen View Point though. On the negative side, bathroom maintenance needed urgent attention. (Read more and see pictures below)

Bathroom was not so clean and the plastic seat on the toilet was broken. Thankfully, the water heater was working. I was advised by hotel staff to leave the water heater switched on at night. This really helped because I could get some hot water in the morning even after a long power cut during the night. Overall, the room was OK. There was two single beds, a small cabinet, a dressing stand and a small TV. North Sikkim is very cold even during May/June, so the hotel provides very thick blankets in the room. Plastic water bottles are not allowed in Lachen, so there was a water jug in the room which I hope contained filtered water. Rooms are located on 2nd/3rd floors but there is no lift. Dining room is on the top floor. In short, there is a lot of stair climbing involved. I did not see any reception counter, perhaps there is none. Staff are friendly and understand Hindi & some English.

My arrival in Lachen was delayed because of a landslide near Mangan, so I missed their evening tea and snack. Dinner was served in their rather nice dining room and would have been great if someone had not accidentally put extra salt in it. The chef later told me that his new assistant was responsible. Lunch next day was alright. They gave me a packed breakfast for my trip to Gurudongmar Lake which turned out to be just 4 slices of white bread with some fruit jam (Read the Story Here). (See food pictures below).

Only BSNL mobile phones work in Lachen, so one would need to borrow a phone from one of the staff members and need to pay for calls in cash (like Rs. 5-10 per minute or so). My best suggestion to really enjoy a stay in Hotel Lachen View Point is to keep expectations low.
