Hotel Sagorika Gangtok Review

Sunday, October 13, 2013

I stayed in Hotel Sagorika for 5 days during my first visit to Gangtok. This was one of the few hotels for which online booking was available and the online reviews weren't very bad. Everybody had mentioned the noise in the morning problem (Read more about the noise problem below). I thought I could live with that for a few days. The price was right - INR 1100 per night for a deluxe room after adjusting the cash back offered by the hotel booking site. Actual price for a deluxe room would be around INR 1600 per day. Hotel Sagorika is located on a small lane called Upper Arithang Road near Old Private Taxi Stand, at a 5-10 minutes' walking distance from M.G. Marg (Tourism Office end). Their phone number and email address are +91-3592206958 and hotelsagorika@gmail.com. Let me warn that walking from the hotel to the main road above is a bit of a climb which can be hard for some. Apart from deluxe rooms, they have Standard, Super Deluxe, and Famility Suites. Tariffs vary according to the season and it would be advisable to check using the link given above. It is a basic hotel and provides facilities such as room service, laundry, local tours, etc. (Read more and see pictures below...)

Deluxe Room Amenities and Room Service

I tried breakfast which was poori-bhaji or paratha-curd, etc. It tasted OK. Complimentary tea/coffee maker and supplied were provided in the room. Filtered water supplied in a water jug was free. Bottled water was available for purchase in the hotel or in the shops opposite the hotel. The room and the bathroom were almost clean. The blanket on the bed was not so warm and did not feel so clean. Don't know how often these blankets get washed. In the bathroom, there was a good water heater but the shower head was not so good and no toilet paper was supplied. May be, higher category rooms have better facilities.

The hotel manager promptly offered to arrange for sightseeing tours for Gangtok and other nearby tourist attractions. I later found that his pricing was around 20% higher than local rates. Even if one wishes to book local tours with the hotel, it would be best to check prices elsewhere before making the deal.

The Noise Problem

This needs to be mentioned prominently. Two things happen every morning. One - the garbage van guys ring a very loud bell to annouce their arrival very early everyday. This bell continues for a while and certainly wakes up all the guests in the hotel. Second - the traffic on the small road outside is heavy and the office-goers' and other vehicles' noise continues up to 10 am. Make no mistake about it - if you stay at Hotel Sagorika, better follow the golden rule of early to bed - early to rise. If you can't, find another hotel. Hotel Sagorika Gangtok Booking Page
