Parivar Vegetarian Restaurant M. G. Marg Gangtok

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Ask anyone in Gangtok about a vegetarian restaurant and the first name they are more likely to say is - Parivar. Located in a basement in the middle of M. G. Marg, Gangtok's tourist center, Parivar is always crowded with not only tourists but locals too. They serve vegetarian North and South Indian snacks, curries, dosa, idli, Thali (combo meal), a bit of Indo-Chinese, soups, desserts, and so on. I particularly liked their Mini Thai (see picture below) that includes Mutter Paneer, Dal Fry, Butter Chapati (4), Rice, Papad, and Pickle and costs Rs. 93 plus tax. Butter Chapati is just like you would have at home and the waiter takes care to bring only two Chapatis first and the rest two later when you have finished the first two. Such care. No wonder the place is called Parivar. There is a regular and heavier Thali also on the menu (additional mixed vegetable, Raita, Butter Naan, etc.) for Rs. 154 + tax. Curries on the menu include Jeera Aloo (Rs 62), Mixed Vegetables (Rs. 84), Shahi Paneer (Rs. 105). Butter Chapati and Tandoori Roti cost Rs. 7 and Rs. 12. South Indian menu has all the favourites like Butter Masala Dosa (Rs. 71), Onion Uttapam (Rs. 66), and Idli Sambar (Rs. 44) (Please see menu pictures below for more). Parivar is not an upscale restaurant so keep your expectations at a moderate level.
