Cheap Hotel in Colombo - Shalimar Hotel Review

Thursday, November 14, 2013

I was attracted to this hotel not only for its low tariff, but also the reason that I would get to see another area of Colombo, away from the Galle Raod, etc. The hotel experience turned out OK while the location and the surroundings did not have much except that Fort area of Colombo was not very far from there. Shalimar Hotel is located at 46, Panchikawatte Road, Colombo - 10. This area is also known as Maradan, a railway station by that name is close by making Shalimar an ideal transit hotel if one is catching an early train to a destination in Sri Lanka. Actually it would be fair to call Shalimar a Transit Hotel because it would be difficult to stay here for any longer than two days. The raod outside only has motor parts shops. I could not locate a single restaurant around. But to be fair to the hotel, the rooms are decent sized, have effective aircon, comfortable bed, clean bathroom, sofa chairs, TV, free wifi, etc. Sleep quality is good. There is a wide balcony and the view outside is nice particulalry on a Sunday when the traffic is less. There is a beautiful old colonial style building called "Town Hall" on the other side of the road (See pictures below). There is a bar-cum-restaurant in the lobby. Room service for food and drinks is available at reasonable prices. The room tariff itself is very reasonable. I paid 44 USD for a deluxe double room. If one has a reason to stay in this area, or is on a low budget, Shalimar is alright.

I left my day job in October 2013 and became a full time blogger. I love travel and hence a travel blog was the obvious place to start from. The result is I currently live in Bengaluru, India. - Narinder Singh.
