The Mango Tree - Indian Restaurant Colombo

The Mango Tree is one of the best Indian Restaurants in Colombo. Its located at 82, Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo-3 (Phone: 7620620) and is open for lunch and dinner daily from 12pm-3pm and 7pm to 11pm. It serves most Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian favorites (except South Indian food), hard & soft drinks, and cocktails, etc. The menu is huge. One can start with a rich Indian drink like Lassi (whisked and watered Yoghurt - Rs. 350) or try an Indian flavoured soup - Lentil Soup or Dal Shorba (Rs. 325), Spinach Soup with roasted cumin (Rs. 325), or chicken or seafood soups (Rs. 375/425). Veggie starters menu has a few interesting items like Paneer Koliwada (Fried cottage cheese dipped in carom seed flavored gram flour), Paneer Ajwaini (Cottage cheese marinated with carom seeds & cooked in clay oven), and Paneer Saunfiya (Cottage cheese marinated with fennel seeds & cooked in clay oven), all three are priced at Rs. 650. For non-vegetarians, Punjabi Fish Fry (Deep fried boneless fish marinated with carom seed flavored gram flour batter - Rs. 850) is an interesting choice. Tandoori Chicken and Seafood starters cost between Rs. 800 and Rs. 1550. Most veggie curries are priced at Rs. 695 and non-veg curries from Rs. 825 to Rs. 1195. Tandoori Indian breads cost between Rs. 165 (plain roti) and Rs. 395 (Kheema Naan). For rice lovers, there is Subzi Dum Biriyani at Rs. 725 and Nawabi Gosht Biriyani at Rs. 995. Indian desserts like Phirni (rice pudding), Rabdi (highly reduced sweetened milk), and Kulfi (Rich Indian ice cream) are all priced at Rs. 425. Take away lunch packets are available for Rs. 400-475 but the minimum order size is 10 packets. Its all rich and heavy food but really tasty. Prices are a bit high but food is served in generous portions here. I thought a fresh fruit salad with a scoop of ice cream (Rs. 475) would be light but was proved wrong (look at the pictures below). My only advice, if you are going to The Mango Tree, go on an empty stomach.
