DTAC Happy Tourist Prepaid SIM Card Thailand

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

(Updated December 2015) DTAC, Thailand's mobile telecom service provider offers a prepaid SIM card specifically for tourists visiting Thailand. The product called DTAC Happy Tourist SIM is somewhat similar to the 3G Tourist Inter SIM sold by True Move in Thailand. Happy Tourist SIM is sold in two variants - 49 THB and 299 THB. The 49 THB variant comes with free 15 THB talk value valid for 35 days from activation whereas the 299 THB variant has 100 THB of free talk value for 35 days. 299 THB variant of Happy SIM allows unlimited free internet (3G / DTAC Wifi) for 7 days, out of which 1.5GB data is allowed at maximum speed. On the 49 THB variant, one gets a free 30 MB internet for 7 days by doing a top-up of THB 150 or more for the first time. Promotional call tariffs enable users to make local calls within Thailand at 0.99 THB per minute. IDD (international calls) to Mainland China and India can be made at 1 THB (China) and 3 THB (India) per minute respectively. To get the special rates, one needs to dial 00400 + Country Code + Area Code + Phone Number. Please confirm the availability of promotional rates and calling procedure at the time of purchase from the company shop or from the information printed on the SIM packaging. The basic Tourist SIM of 299 THB has a 7-days validity but the company offers 10, 15, or 30 days' options too. Keep reading...

Internet after using the free data can be very expensive at 2 THB per MB so in case of need, buy an internet data pack from DTAC instead of using the per MB rate. Domestic and international SMS cost 3 and 8 THB per SMS respectively. Finding this SIM card on the streets of Thailand or even at mobile SIM shops is not easy. According to the company, the Happy Tourist SIM is available at 7-Eleven, Family Mart stores and other SIM shops. From my experience I can tell that these 7-Eleven type of shops are rarely interested in selling new SIM cards but only agree to do a top-up. But the DTAC Happy Tourist SIM can be purchased at Suvarnabhumi Airport DTAC Shop at Arrival Hall 2nd Floor. In Pattaya, I could not find this SIM anywhere. So if you are arriving at Suvarnabhumi, your best chance of being able to buy a DTAC SIM is there. DTAC internet speed is better and they offer options for tourists staying longer than 7 days (see below), otherwise the True Move 3G Tourist Inter SIM is also good. True SIM can be purchased from company shops at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, and Phuket International airports too.
