Hotel Sunrich Kandy Review

Saturday, February 1, 2014

Hotel Sunrich was not an easy choice to make for my first visit to Kandy. The distance of this hotel from Kandy's main tourist attractions made it hard. But I wanted to spend my three nights in Kandy in three different hotels located in different areas of the city. So having been in Majestic Tourist Hotel and Kandyan View Holiday Bungalow for the first two nights I hired a Tuk Tuk to take me to Hotel Sunrich which was a good 12 KM away from the town's center, at 260/4, Hedeniya, Werellagama, Kandy. A Standard Room for one night there would cost me 37 USD without breakfast. The Tuk Tuk cost 600 LKR one way. Later I learnt that the Tuk Tuk was not really necessary because there is a very convenient bus service that operates from Kandy's Good Shed Bus Stop to Kurunegalla all day with the last bus leaving Good Shed at 9.30 or 10 pm. One needs to get down at Hedeniya Market stop from where the hotel is a few steps away on the main road itself. There are daily needs' shops, etc. on this road. Read more...

One may take the Tuk Tuk when carrying heavy luggage but for the daily trips to and from Kandy, the bus is the best option. Its a beautiful plane road all the way to the hotel, with residential developments on both sides of the road. After one ride in this bus, staying in Hotel Sunrich began to make sense. It was just cheaper as compared to the Tuk Tuk fare one needs to pay to go up and down the hilly hotels close to Kandy. Sunrich was easier to locate too as compared to the first two hotels I stayed in.

My Standard Room was large with a comfortable King Bed, an air-conditioner, a TV, a mini fridge, a small table & two chairs, a wooden cabinet, a window, and a clean bathroom. Free drinking water was supplied in a plastic jug. The room was adequate and good value for the price. There was no lift in the building, but someone from the hotel carried my bags up to the room.

Outside, there was an open and green compound with a swimming pool in one corner, though the pool did not look like it was being used by anyone. The hotel seemed to be a popular party venue for the locals. There was no party or noise that night so I slept peacefully. I did not feel like ordering the 10 USD breakfast which which would be OK for those who can eat eggs. I felt that the hotel's management should  offer free breakfast to compensate the guests for the extra distance from the town. Still, Hotel Sunrich is not a bad choice for a few days' stay if a tourist can get used to the bus ride to and from Kandy. Check-in after 12pm and check-out before 12pm.
