Silvikris Villa Colombo Review

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

Silvikris Villa is located at 32/9A, Shanthi Mawatha, Kirulapona, Colombo-6.  Its a hotel but called a villa probably because it looks like a private residence from  both outside and inside. There is no banner or signboard outside to confirm the hotel status of this property. Due to all this, finding the hotel for the first time will not be easy for a guest. After reaching the area, calling the hotel staff (+94 774984487) for directions will be a good idea. In Kirulapona, there a fashion store called ODEL. The second right turn after ODEL is Shanthi Mawatha. Getting to the hotel requires a few more turns inside Shanthi Mawatha. So good luck finding Silvikris Villa. To get to ODEL from the city, one can take public bus number 138 from Colombo Fort Station and get down near ODEL (after Kirulapona stop). Airport is a 1750 LKR Budget Taxi ride away from Silvikris Villa.

In a way, Silvikris Villa is less than a hotel because there is no reception desk, and no breakfast or meals are prepared except coffee (which is free). The hotel staff can order food from outside which guests can have on the large dining table in the lobby. In all they have about 6 or 7 rooms one of which (on the top floor) is really large. Its called "Super Deluxe" or something like that. My deluxe room would be exactly like a standard room if it did not have the large balcony. After being in Silvikris Villa for three days, I learnt that the room categorization - standard / deluxe or whatever would depend on the convenience of the management on a particular day. See pictures and read more below...

The balcony was the highlight of the "deluxe" room they gave me. The peaceful and very green surroundings would be a fine setting for the early morning coffee. Apart from that the room did not justify the 170 USD I paid for three nights. There was a coffee maker but no supplies were given and two small water bottles were given only for the first day. Strange policy. They said the hotel could not afford to provide any tea/coffee supplies in the room and could afford water bottles only for the first day regardless of how many days' booking a guest makes.

No breakfast and no in-house meal service. Add to that all that distance from downtown Colombo, and no tourist attraction nearby. I did not think I got value for my money. After all, how long can one admire the interiors (see more pictures below) and the green surroundings. The manager told me most of the bookings they got were for one day or even part of a day before their guests moved on to their next destination, Kandy or something. Despite all the interior work they have done, the property just feels boring. Their guests are right. Silvikris Villa is only good for one night stay.
