Sri Vihar, formerly known as Shanthi Vihar, is an Indian vegetarian restaurant located in Havelock Town, Havelock Road, Colombo (phone: 011-2596597). This is opposite the Buddhist Cultural Centre. Official address of the restaurant reads as Sri Sambuddhathva Jayanthi Mawatha instead of Havelock Road but it is one and the same place. In many places on the internet, Sri Vihar is still mentioned as Shanthi Vihar. Well, if you know them, Sri Vihar is like a typical Udupi restaurant. Udupi restaurants serve South Indian food mainly but the menu in such restaurants generally also has some North Indian curries and tandoori / tawa breads like roti, chapati, and naan, etc. Sri Vihar is no different. It is open from 7 am to 10.30 pm serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in-between, all day. It's a really popular joint, may be because of the low prices or great tasting food or a bit of both. Finding a vacant table in Sri Vihar during lunch hours is not easy. Guests are sometimes required to share a table with others, but seeing the crowd in the restaurant, I think one would not mind that. Read more...

There is also an Indian sweets counter for take-away. Sri Vihar is perhaps the best value for money Indian restaurant in Colombo and that is what makes it so popular. Still, if one is looking for a more upmarket (expensive) alternative around, there is Amrith Indian Restaurant nearby. For Sri Lankan vegetarian food, try Paradise Food Court just across the road from Sri Vihar.
