Vegetarian Food in Macau Casino Restaurants

Friday, March 7, 2014

(Updated September 2016) There are two very popular American casinos in Macau City - Wynn and MGM Grand. Luckily for me, at least as far as dining is concerned, both these casinos have restaurants that serve some vegetarian food. My favourite restaurant in Wynn is "Cafe Esplanada". Its located somewhere inside the maze that this casino property is. I have been to Cafe Esplanada a dozen times but have had to ask for directions from their security staff every time. They all know where Cafe Esplanada is and are more than willing to help. My other favourite is "Square Eight", the MGM Grand's restaurant attached to their casino floor. This one is easier to locate because MGM's casino floor is just one big hall unlike Wynn casino that has many sections and confusing turns. Yet, I never mind trying to find my way to good vegetarian food. Read below about what they serve in these two eating joints...

Cafe Esplanada (Wynn Macau) opens daily from 6.30 am to midnight for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant has special vegan & vegetarian menus. I have found these options available in the restaurant most of the times I went there but the food items in the menu keep changing / disappearing / reappearing. Its a matter of luck actually considering that the restaurant is part of a casino hotel. In September 2016 I got extra lucky when I found an Indian curry on the restaurant's menu. With Indian restaurants disappearing fast from Macau's territory, this was a big relief. I will write more about that here but first let me detail what these vegetarian / vegan menus contained in September 2016:

The Indian curry (September 2016) was cooked really well except for too many pieces of potatoes in it. I thought that even if they had given a little less quantity by cutting down on potatoes, this would have been a nice meal. The pickles, the fried poppadoms, and the small curd chutney were all good.

Stir-fried Shredded Potatoes with Hot & Sour Sauce

Stir Fried Shredded Potato Square Eight Restaurant MGM Grand Macau

Square Eight has one 100% vegetarian cooked food item in their menu. Its shredded potatoes with red chillies and green bell peppers. Its a natural choice for me though sometimes I hate the excessive use of oil in it. The red chillies make the shredded potatoes very hot but still this preparation tastes great. I always use the free Chinese tea served along with every meal here to counter the hot chillies. Not much can be done about the oil but I think I should have asked for less oil while ordering rather than complaining later. My guess is that Chinese chefs use too much oil in everything because more oil makes it easier for them to turn the food around in their wok. Rather selfish of them. Despite all this, I offer my sincere thanks to Square Eight for having shredded potatoes in their menu.

"Create Your Own" Sandwich with free Drink

Iced Lemon Tea Square Eight Restaurant MGM Grand Macau

Square Eight's "create Your Own" sandwich is a great value meal. There is a list of ingredients to choose from and there are in all three vegetarian choices - Tomato, Lettuce, and Cheese. One can choose a maximum of three ingredients. The bread is white and the drink can be any soft drink, tea or coffee. My favourite here is Iced Lemon Tea. The bread is lightly toasted but the tomato/lettuce/cheese inside all remain cold. A good helping of French fries accompanies the sandwich. The taste is pleasant and thankfully, its a vegetarian meal.

More Vegetarian Options At Pastry Bar, MGM

MGM resort's Pastry Bar is another wonderful eatery located very close to Square Eight. They have a few more vegetarian items in this beautiful place. I have dedicated a separate article to Pastry Bar that you can read here.
