Maitri Restaurant and Bar, One of the Best in Lumbini

Sunday, May 25, 2014

Maitri Restaurant is a part of Hotel Ananda Inn which also is one of the best hotels in Lumbini offering air-conditioned standard rooms starting at 42 USD per day. Breakfast is not included in the room tariff but really nice and reasonably priced food is available in Maitri Restaurant. Maitri is located opposite East Gate Number 4 of the Buddha Complex and Maya Devi Temple is a mere 500 meters away from here. The restaurant is open from 7.00am to 9.30pm, but lost dinner order is accepted latest by 8.30pm. Early closing of restaurants in Lumbini is common. Maitri serves vegetarian & non-vegetarian breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, and also alcoholic & other beverages. Breakfast is served from 7.00am to 10.00am. Continental breakfast with juice, toast/butter/jam, cornflakes/porridge, and tea/coffee costs 275 Nepali rupees. A 10% service charge and 13% VAT is added to the bill. Individual items for breakfast include Poori Bhaji (NPR 150), Aloo Paratha with Pickle (1 paratha NPR 80), Pancake with Honey (1 for NPR 100), and Peanut Butter Toast (NPR 100). Keep reading...

For lunch and dinner, a wide choice of Nepali, Indian, Chinese, and Western food is available. They make buffet arrangement when they have large tour groups staying with them.

Nepali Traditional Set Meal Maitri Restaurant Lumbini

To get a taste of traditional Nepali food by ordering a Nepali Set Meal (Vegetarian for NPR 200) that includes Dal, Vegetable Curry, A Green Vegetable, Steamed Rice, Salad, Pickle, and Papad (see the picture above). This meal is ready during Lunch and Dinner time and is served at once. Non-vegetarian Set Meal is available for NPR 350.

One can also try the Nepali Noodle Soup (Thupka) for NPR 125 (vegetable option). Chinese rice / noodles cost upwards of NPR 125. Veg and non-veg Indian curries cost between NPR 100 and 250. Chinese and Western main course dishes cost between NPR 200 and 300. For dessert, try a Dry Fruit Custard for NPR 100 only. From the bar menu, a 500ml can of beer costs NPR 250 and 650ml bottled beers cost upwards of NPR 300. Local and Indian spirits cost NPR 140 upwards for 60ml.

The restaurant can get a little hot at times. I wish it had air-conditioning. Still, ceiling fans do their job and no doubt, Maitri is a winner in terms of the quality of food. Hotel Ananda Inn is also recommended.
