Aum Cafe: Great Vegetarian Food at Assi Ghat Varanasi

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Two of Varanasi's best restaurants are located near Assi Ghat. One of them is called Open Hand Cafe. Aum Cafe is the other. Aum Cafe is even more special because it is 100% vegetarian. Aum Cafe's address is B1/201 Assi Ghat, Varanasi 221001. Phone:  +91 93356 31122 and the official directions to find it are like this: If you climb the steps of Assi Ghat, you will find Aum Cafe behind the temple. I am not sure of these but if you asked someone at Assi Ghat, they will most likely show you the way to Aum Cafe. Its a small two-storey house in a narrow lane, converted into a shop on the first floor and a restaurant on the terrace. Perhaps there is a massage room too in this building because Aum Cafe's menu advertises an Ayurvedic massage which costs INR 2500 for one hour and requires an advance appointment. The first floor shop has silk, cotton and rayon garments, Tee-shirts, bangles made of recycled camel bone, etc. The cafe opens from 7.00am to 3.30pm everyday except Monday. Keep reading for the food they serve...

Aum Cafe claims to wash their fruits and veggies in purified water which are then soaked in iodine solution to kill bacteria. Most of the herbs, spices and teas are organic. The place is totally vegetarian, not even eggs are used.

For lunch, you can choose from three variants of Pasta starting at INR 130, a Pizza (INR 150), Burrito (INR 140), a Veggie Burger (INR 120), and some sandwiches at INR 100 each. There are Salads, Hummus, Soups & Pita Pockets upwards of INR 80. Desserts are a real treat here and I would like to mention them all - Mom's Bread Pudding (INR 60), Spice Cake with Apples & Cream (INR 70), Cinnamon Bun (INR 70), and Double Chocolate and Carrot Cakes at INR 70 each. These are great desserts at great prices. There are some simple ice creams and milk shakes too. The menu is small but covers all that is necessary. The food is fresh and tasty, the service is super quick and you get to use free wifi as long as you want. You just can't go wrong with Aum cafe. I wish they served dinner too.
