The two places recommended for staying in Chiang Mai are Thapae Gate (Old City) and Night Bazaar. After flipping a coin, I decided to stay in the Night Bazaar area and Hotel Suriwongse (Corner of Night Bazaar and Loikroh Road, phone: +66 53 270 051) looked alright because of several reasons. The price was right (about 50 USD a day), breakfast was included in the price, location was bang in front of Night Bazaar, and the online reviews were not bad. I had booked a Superior Room (basic) but they upgraded me to a Deluxe or something that was a large and comfy room with some extra furniture and a bathroom with a bathtub. A TV, a mini-fridge, a writing desk, a cabinet with bathrobes, slippers, & a locker completed the furnishing. Wifi was free and worked almost ok, most of the time. Two free water bottles a day and a tea/coffee maker with some supplies were provided. The AC worked and I slept well. They offered in-room massage service at 400 THB an hour which I tried and found to be so-so in terms of the quality. The area outside is full of massage shops, both cheap and high-end, so the hotel's massage service can be missed. A taxi ride from Chiang Mai airport to this hotel would cost you 150 THB. For going back to the airport, use a tuk tuk or a Song Thaew (local taxi) from outside because the hotel's drop service is really expensive. Keep reading...

The free breakfast was good at least for those who like non-vegetarian food. I could still find some fruits, bread/butter, etc. Their staff in the restaurant surprised me by saying that someone had already taken breakfast by telling them my room number. I felt like leaving right then. My first day of stay in Suriwongse Hotel was the last time I had breakfast there. Funny staff, they were so much in a hurry to close the restaurant for free breakfast so that they could prepare for paid lunch service.

The lobby of the hotel has a tour desk from where I booked a half-day tour of Doi Suthep at 500THB. The tour was Ok but the lady at the tour desk was not willing to utter a single word of travel advice. All she wanted was to sell tours. I almost had to snatch a free tourist map from her.
On the positive side, the location is great and there is this Coin Operated Self Laundry Service opposite the hotel. Suriwongse Hotel could be value if you get your booking at a discount. I am not sure I will stay in this hotel at their rack rates. The leaky roof near the restaurant says something about the place. In general, the hotel has nothing to be excited about except may be the location. Its just boring.
