The Best Tourist Road Map for Chiang Mai

Wednesday, December 31, 2014

If you are going to Chiang Mai as a tourist, particularly for the first time, then you are most probably looking for a road and attractions map of the city. You will find several such Chiang Mai maps starting with the airport itself. Your hotel will have some too. But what I found at the tour desk of my hotel - Suriwongse Hotel at Night Bazaar - is that hotels mostly keep sponsored tourist maps. The problem with sponsored tourist maps is that they contain more advertising than information. Suriwongse Hotel gave me a map sponsored by a certain Gems Gallery and it had very little information of use. Later when I visited the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Chiang Mai Office, they gave me a map free of cost that I found to be a real gem of a tourist map. This gem is called "Sawasdee Chiang Mai City Guide and Easy Walking Map with taxi Directions in Thai" (see picture below). The Sawasdee Chiang Mai map has a price of 40 THB when it is sold to you, otherwise it is also given out free of cost at a few good places in the city. Keep reading...

Sawasdee Chiang Mai Map contains easy walking directions to see all the attractions of the Chiang Mai Old City, a heritage & attractions map of the nearby hill side where the attractions such as Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and Bhuping Palace are located, and of course a complete road map of the Chiang Mai City.

Chiang Mai's best money exchange places, shopping destinations such as malls, and massage shops/ spas are also marked in this map. And yes there are a few advertisements that you will not mind because of all that free information that this map contains.

Where to find the Sawasdee Chiang Mai Tourist Map

Sawasdee Chiang Mai map is available in the city at select hotels, guest houses, coffee shops and transport centres such as bus stations, railway station, airline offices, etc. If you need an individual copy, you may send an email to the company at and request for a map. I would say that even if you have to pay 40 THB for this map, it is totally worth it because the map will help you save a lot more money than that during your stay in Chiang Mai.

I left my day job in October 2013 and became a full time blogger. I love travel and hence a travel blog was the obvious place to start from. The result is I currently live in Bengaluru, India. - Narinder Singh.
