Fragrance Sunflower Lorong 10 Geylang Singapore Hotel Review

Thursday, March 12, 2015

Fragrance Sunflower hotel was going to be a new experience for me but since it was the cheapest available for that particular day, I decided to book it. In any case, all Fragrance group hotels in Singapore are more or less similar with minor glitches in some of their rooms. This one cost me roughly 70 Singapore Dollars a night which is the discounted price of a room here even for walk-in guests. Fragrance Sunflower is located on Lorong 10 which is almost equidistant from both Kallang and Aljunied MRT stations. Lorong 10 is not totally free from red-light activity because there is one seedy outlet towards the end of the Lorong. To be fair, I did not see any funny business going on in the Lorong during my stay here, still a family might want to think before deciding to stay on Lorong 10. Coming back to the the hotel, Fragrance Sunflower has a small lobby with one round table and four chairs for guests and two massage chairs that work after inserting coins in them. There were no internet PCs in the lobby. The room they offered me was a compromise. I had arrived at the hotel at 6.00 am while the earliest check-in possible at Fragrance Hotels is 1.00 pm as per company policy. Check-out time is 12.00 noon. They offered to give me early check-in at 8.00am if I agreed to staying in a room with two single beds. I need sleep more than a double bed and therefore accepted to this compromise. Keep reading...

My standard room was supposed to be a Non-smoking one but apparently the earlier guest had been smoking in the room. The smell of smoke was unmistakable. Fortunately after a few hours of running the A.C., the smell subsided and was totally gone by the next day. The troubles with a few other things remained though.

The single beds were really narrow and so was the draw-quilt that kept slipping away from my body during the night. The A.C. was strong enough so a bigger bed and a bigger draw-quilt would have been really nice. But that was the price I was paying for my early check-in. By the second night I got adjusted to all that.

WiFi internet was chargeable at 5 SGD for 2 hours and 10 SGD for 24 hours but the signal strength in my room 405 on 4th floor was at about 50 percent. It would be better to buy a SingTel prepaid SIM and use their internet.

In the room, apart from the two single beds, there was a small LCD TV on the wall opposite the beds, a narrow cupboard in one side, and a small writing desk in the middle of the beds that also served as a pantry stand. The two charging points above this table were helpful. A hair dryer was there too. Two small water bottles, two coffee sachets, two tea bags, two sugar sachets, and two creamer sachets were provided everyday. The tea/coffee maker was not clean though and I could not use that. There were small ants hidden in the pantry table who came out of their hiding places every time I prepaid my coffee there. These tiny ants seem to be there in all the Fragrance hotels in Singapore. Another problem in the room was a continuous humming noise coming from the electrical panel hidden in the cupboard. Fortunately the noise was not much if the cupboard was kept closed. There was a real window overlooking the street. This window could even be opened to let some fresh air in.

The bathroom was clean except for some mould on the bathroom door. There was no bathroom door closing set-up on the outside so the door remained ajar when I was not using the bathroom. Inside, all the bathroom fittings worked perfectly which was a pleasant surprise. The water heater switch was outside the bathroom which, once switched on, heated enough water for my shower within 5 minutes. The so-called three-in-one 'shower gel/shampoo/conditioner' dispenser on a bathroom wall was quite handy.

This was only a two night stay and because of that I did not mind the glitches much. Fragrance hotels are never perfect but not very bad either. They are cheap and make for good stays if the guest keeps an open mind. My Fragrance Sunflower experience was no different. Fragrance Sunflower Booking Site
