Best Western Klassique Sukhumvit Bangkok Hotel Review

Sunday, March 20, 2016

I was searching for a Bangkok hotel on my favourite meta search engine for hotels and came across this place. It was being touted as the first Best Western Klassique Hotel in Thailand. After staying there for four nights in September 2015, I sincerely wished that it would also be the last. There was a "Book Direct" option at just 630 THB a day tax included for a "Superior Room" but no breakfast. Other booking sites were offering the same room at a much higher price. Rarely we see this kind of a situation when a property directly sells rooms at a cheaper rate than third party booking sites. Then there was the "first Klassique in Thailand" claim. The price was a temptation too, because 600 THB is pretty much the base price for acceptable hotel accommodation in Bangkok. It was a new area for me - the hotel's official address mentioned "Prakhanong" but the closest BTS station from the hotel was On Nut. All in all, it did not seem like a bad idea and so I went ahead and did the booking. Actually it did turn out to be a bad idea. Keep reading...

Area-wise, On Nut does not have much to offer to a tourist. There was a Tesco Lotus attached to the station where the locals did their daily shopping after getting off the trains. From the station, the hotel was a 10 minute walk. I got directions to the hotel from the BTS staff at the station. They are always helpful.

The Hotel

To start with, the interiors of the hotel was nothing like the pictures on their website. The lobby was a dark, sad looking place with hardly any activity. The staff at the front office seemingly had all the time in the world because they not only asked for my passport, but wanted to copy by immigration departure card too. It was September, low season, and perhaps I was going to be the only guest arriving there that day. After wasting 10 minutes for check-in, I was finally able to get into the elevator and reached my room.

The Superior Room

My superior room was small with a small bathroom. The bed was not so small and the TV in the front was 32 inch. There was a writing desk too, because supposedly it was a "business" hotel. Other amenities in the room were a digital locker and a tea/coffee maker with some supplies. The room window opened to a bad view of the next building.

Poor Housekeeping

Housekeeping was very poor as it seemed they did not change the bed linen for all the four days of my stay. Some extra cushions that I did not need and had kept on a side desk were left by the housekeeping on the floor. They gave me a shower cap on on the first day. For the next three days there was no shower cap. When I asked the front office people they said they were trying to locate shower caps but were not succeeding. Perhaps they did not want to say that they did not have money to buy any more shower caps. Good thing I had paid just 630 THB.

No Breakfast

There was no free or paid breakfast option. They said due to lean season, breakfast service was not available.

Poor Internet

The Wi-Fi service was poor too. It asked for authentication every time I tried to connect and after the second day stopped connecting due to some error. I had my True Move internet pack and was able to manage with that.

No In-house Laundry

There was no in-house laundry service but instead they asked me to go to a nearby place where they had a "tie up" (20 THB a piece). I was astonished to hear them say that because it was raining outside, I would have to take the laundry to that place myself. When the weather was good, the laundry could be dropped at the front office and the staff would get the job done. At that point, even the 630 THB seemed too much to pay for this hotel.

Water Logging Outside

During rains, there was serious water logging outside the hotel making it difficult to cross the road.

Cheap Is Seldom Good

After seeing the state of affairs in Best Western Klassique Sukhumvit, I wondered if during busy season also they got any guests. Actually they should not. Most probably this hotel will get sold out to another chain sooner than later. And my On Nut gig is done.

I left my day job in October 2013 and became a full time blogger. I love travel and hence a travel blog was the obvious place to start from. The result is I currently live in Bengaluru, India. - Narinder Singh. (Email:
