Thailand's King Bhumibol To Be Cremated on October 26, 2017

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

King Bhumibol Adulyadej will be cremated on October 26, 2017 after more than a year of his death on October 13, 2016. The funeral rites will begin on October 25 and conclude on October 29, 2017. The official mourning period to mark the death of the much loved king of Thailand is ending on October 30, 2017.  King Bhumibol's body is currently being kept in the Grand Palace Bangkok from where it will be brought to the site of the cremation on October 25, 2017. The cremation site is in Sanlam Luong Park in front of the Grand Palace where a huge funeral pyre is being constructed for the royal cremation.

Should tourists visit Thailand during this period? Keep reading...

King Bhumibol Adulyadej (1927 - 2016)

Likely Impact on Tourism in October 2017

King Bhumibol's death in October 2016 had plunged Thailand into mourning following which the party scene in the country was severely affected. "Entertainment functions, joyful events", etc. were stopped or toned down. Nightlife venues like Nana Entertainment Plaza and Soi Cowboy in Bangkok were shut down for a week following the King's death.

The funeral period from October 25 to 30, 2017 will possibly see a repeat of what happened in October 2016. There are no definitive indicators of what to expect but the Thai government is making very elaborate arrangements for the funeral and there maybe restrictions on parties / music in bars and some nightlife establishments may again be shut down during those days. Because of the deep love Thais have for the late King, the atmosphere in general will be of sadness.

If you have not already made bookings to visit Thailand during October 2017, I will suggest to avoid the period from October 20th to 31st. In other words, return from Thailand before October 20th or go after October 31st unless you are interested in being there just to see the funeral. I left my day job in October 2013 and became a full time blogger. I love travel and hence a travel blog was the obvious place to start from. The result is I currently live in Bengaluru, India. - Narinder Singh.
