Blue Gum Hotel (219/1, Tudella, Ja-Ela, Colombo) is a great option for spending a night close to Colombo’s International Airport after a late arrival or before an early morning departure. Its about a 15-20 minute drive from the airport. The reception operates 24/7, late breakfast is allowed and its free. The hotel staff know that people arrive late at night so no one disturbs you in the morning to clean the room or for anything else. There are Sandard and Deluxe rooms to choose from at prices between 40 and 60 USD a night.
My standard double room cost me 36 USD for a night including breakfast and free wifi. The room and the bathroom were clean, the queen bed was adequate, air-conditioning was effective, and there was a ceiling fan too. A small LCD TV, a wall mounted cabinet, a cloth stand, and a small bedside table with a telephone on top completed the rest of the furnishing. A bottle of water was given free of cost on arrival. I arrived at around 4 am. There was a security guard who did the check-in formality and another guy carried my bags to the room. They asked me when I would like my breakfast the next morning. I told them “Late” and they said no problem. Sleep quality was good. I finally had my breakfast after check out the next day (at around 12 PM). It was fresh fruits, toasted white bread, butter-jam, and coffee. For non-vegetarians they would include eggs too. Breakfast is served in the lounge area outside the room.
The front desk staff is really helpful. I was told I could pay for the room in LKR or USD. The gentleman in the picture below made so many calls to arrange for a budget taxi for me to go to Colombo city. Finally, becuase the budget taxi was not available, he guided me to the bus stop on the road outside from where I got an airconditioned bus to my next hotel “Shalimar” for 100 Lankan Rupees. The bus dropped me right outside Shalimar. Blue Gum is real value.
