Sikkim is India’s most popular tourist destination in the North Eastern Region of India. Technically, “Sikkim is geographically not a contiguous part of the peripheral northeast region. It is separated by the Chicken’s neck corridor or Siliguri corridor, strategically-located tiny strip of land in north Bengal that joins the North East with the rest of India”. But since it is a member state of the NEC, it is also not wrong to say that Sikkim is a North Eastern State. Often the original seven states of the NEC are called seven sisters and Sikkim has been referred to as the brother to the seven states. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi clubbed Sikkim in the grouping and called all the eight states together as ‘Ashta Lakshmi’ thus making Sikkim an integral part of the North Eastern Region.

From the tourism point of view, Sikkim is the easiest place to visit among all the states of the region. Most people in Sikkim understand Hindi and English, vegetarian food is available everywhere, and the hotels are cheap & nice. Sikkim is a beautiful state blessed by nature. It has some very well known attractions for tourists such as Nathula Pass, Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, Chhangu Lake, Gurudongmar Lake, and Yumthang Valley. A three day tour of North Sikkim can be your most adventurous travel experience ever.

Sikkim’s capital city Gangtok is one of the cleanest hill cities in India and is a joy to visit. M. G. Marg in Gangtok is like the Ridge in Simla, only it is livlier.

The only problem with travelling to Sikkim is that you need to pass through West Bengal. The nearest operational airport is Bagdogra (Siliguri) where an agent mafia loots money from passengers who need to take a taxi to reach Gangtok (5-6 hour trip). Out of the roughly INR 2000 you pay for the taxi, the mafia from West Bengal pockets INR 1000. For the last few years I have been hearing that Sikkim will soon get its own airport. I just hope that day comes soon. Anyway, here is the list of all the articles that I have published on my travels to Sikkim:
